Since Biden is president, why can’t he just appoint a commission to investigate Jan. 6?

Optics because it may seem like retaliation? The mob was trying to cancel his win.
He can, and probably will have to. My understanding is this will be a committee selected by the Democrats. What they wanted was a by bipartisan commission. Republicans worry what the GQP role will turn out to be. Easier to deny a Democratic committee report.

Bipartisanship or people won’t believe it credible

I see your point but why not force a vote to let Republicans hang themselves first by going on the record against. Once it fails then proceed.

There will be an eventual realisation that there is not going to be any cooperation between the GOP and the Democratic Party. There are forces afoot to bring about a dictatorship without being themselves aware of the horrors of such a system of government!

Thats the thing. What are the Dems afraid of? Republicans are going to call us radical anyway.... so Dems should just go for it! They need to stop caring what Republicans say and do whats right! Stop apologizing. Be BOLD! That is how Dems will add more seats! Not by being afraid.
