A “1st Principle” which should be taught to every American child growing up - but that somehow seems to have fallen by the wayside - is commitment to individual liberty balanced with concern for the common good. It will take years but we need to radically shore up the common good

If there is no individual liberty than the common good will be tyranny. Centralized powers will exploit the IDEA of a common good but it demands the individual conform or else......

I think the mindset of 12-step programs would help: if there's no group to support us, we fall one by one. Our personal freedom depends on the structures that defend them.
