The profundity of the founder’s vision is not that they thought all people would be smart and nice all the time. But they believed that if there was free education and a free press, more often than not good ideas and wisdom would rise to the top.

Yes, in a true démocratic society, social élite would use their ressources to fight for éducation, free press and economic freedoms for the people (instead of rewarding those already at the top).
