There was no standing army at the beginning of World War II so of course they had to build one. It was turning the machinery of war into a profit-making venture afterwards that Eisenhower so rightly criticized.

Well it could be argued that WW2 was a wake up call. The period following Pearl Harbor was pretty scary and there was no guarantee we would win. I still believe we are over militarized though
Hate to tell you this, but there was. That’s how the US extended imperialism prior to WW2. There was Corregidor, in the Philippines, for example. The massive naval base at Pearl Harbor. The military just wasn’t the size of the Axis Powers and that was the problem.
