Some people only want to talk about what America has done right and have no listening for the terrible things we need to atone for and correct. Others only want to talk about the terrible things we've done and have no listening for what we've done right. Both are wrong.

Are we the sum total of our mistakes? The sum total of our triumphs? Perhaps we are more complex then we will ever come to understand.

I agree with this. What I have witnessed personally and have a problem with, is 1) Using the things we’ve done right as a way to justify what we haven’t done right, and 2) What we’ve done wrong as solely the responsibility of one “side”

There's truth to this point. But, in my opinion, the wrongness of the latter perspective does not even begin to counterweigh the danger, chauvinism, and obscenity of the former perspective. Both may be wrong, but they don't appear to be equal opposites to me.

Right. And don't get me started on what happens when you are "first". First railroad system: everyone else learned and surpassed us. First subways, airports: same. First universal education and semi-democratic institutions: same. Great to be first, but learn from others!

America was created on Genocide and Slavery and Rape of the Environment, I fail to see all the "good" considering where we are. Poised on the Edge of The End of Civilization, with an Oligarch owned Government that is paralyzed to actually act on it in any manner, shape or form.
