Our military was once viewed with great respect around the world, seen as a power used for the most part to back up American values. Today it’s often viewed with great disdain around the world, seen as a power used for the most part to back up American corporate interests.

The US only opposes fascists if they threaten US ruling class interests. They supported Franco in Spain.
Here’s from War is a Racket by Smedley Butler, one of the top generals of WW1.

The US military has never changed. The people just see the corruption and war crimes now. Turn off the television Marianne.

It hasn't been viewed that way even among US military leaders. Ulysses S. Grant on the Mexican-American War, said it was "the most unjust war ever waged.". In fact, he felt the Civil War was God's retribution for stealing over half of Mexico. Also, read Smedley Butler.

Read The Shock Doctrine- you'll get many examples of how the US military and intelligence serve interests of capital.

was it really ever viewed the former way? if so, I think that's just a function of propaganda, rather than an actual shift in our intent. We were couping for the fruit company before you were born, i think.

This is an incredibly bad take. Sorry, Marianne. The US military has never been a force for good. American values have never been good, either.

Is it illegitimate to pretend that the US is entitled to occupy sovereign nations and claim their resources as "US interests"? Yes, that's imperialism. And if you think that other countries should bow to US interests, then you've been militarized.
