1/ In a very real way, the shift from a pagan earth-based spirituality to the patriarchal Christian notion of man’s right to dominate nature was a causal factor contributing to what would one day become our environmental crisis.

2/ The environmental crisis and the political/economic corruption that perpetuate it are all fueled by humanity’s lack of reverence and devotion to anyone and anything but ourselves. An overly materialized worldview counterintuitively leads to violence toward the material world.

So Marianne, are you saying Christianity is responsible for our current environmental crisis? Question. Where in this blame game do we place non-Christian individual/corporate/political greed, power, and control?

We'd also still be living in mud huts

Genesis 2:15 "Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it" The issue here is not scripture. The issue is humans completely twisting what was meant to good... Most american christians are satanists.... Simple

Well, sure, but as our self-awareness expanded, we were bound to get lost in it. And here we are. In deep. Now it's time to come home. (And we don't have to abandon the self as we fear; just the illusion of separateness... I shot the sheriff. But I didn't shoot no deputy. :-) )

Well, you opened up an interesting can of worms.

People here are confusing their own faith with the role Christianity has played in justifying colonialism and the exploitation of the Earth. My own question is whether the theology of "dominion" preceded this exploitation or was created to justify what was really driven by greed.

So why are non-Christian countries the biggest polluters?
Replying to @marwilliamson
Wrong. The environmental crisis is a result of humanity fixing enormous problems that plagued us for millennia. Starving and sick people aren't worried about pollution. Now that we've dramatically improved former the l we can start focusing on the latter
