I know people are going to laugh at me about this but it always strikes me how these birds never look in the mirror so they actually have no idea what they look like.

They probably do. Birds are very good at recognising other birds of their species.

Corvids, including crows, ravens and jays, may be capable bout only if self identification but also may have a concept of self and a functional theory of mind. Corvids are really neat.

I'm afraid of spiders and I've often thought, if they could only see themselves they'd be afraid too. But perhaps they feel the same about me.
