The worst aspect of medicalizing anxiety disorders and common forms of mental depression is that it distracts attention from social and economic causes such stress over crushing debt, lack of opportunity and a corrupt food system. We need to look at causes, not just symptoms.

I've always wondered why funding can be found to pay social workers and mental health providers, but there never seems to be a place in the budget for the people that need resources. Basically, people are collecting paychecks to tell poor people there isn't any funding available.

Teleology has become the new religion of Americans. Ignoring the causes, loving to complaining about symptoms.

I actually agree with this on a conceptual level but absent a massive non-medical social revolution I think just treating the symptoms is perfectly valid and humane

Just think of the medical breakthroughs that may be possible if we looked for things outside the realm of patentability. There needs to be an open source medical industrial complex.
