The worst aspect of medicalizing anxiety disorders and common forms of mental depression is that it distracts attention from social and economic causes such stress over crushing debt, lack of opportunity and a corrupt food system. We need to look at causes, not just symptoms.

Preventative medicine is key in helping deal with these issues, in addition to economic relief. Diagnosing symptoms is useful, but the social stigma that comes from some labels can be damaging. Especially when people respond with contempt instead of compassion!

Hear, hear! It's just another aspect of the attitude that there's a quick fix, or a pill, for anything that ails you. Got heartburn? Hey, don't worry about your diet, just take this pill! Yeah, that's the ticket! Meanwhile people's health deteriorates and Big Pharma rakes it in.

So true! Our social consciousness today tends to compartmentalism and reaction rather than thinking holistically so we can prepare people to develop their own coping skills.
