"Smugly demeaning" is the mean-girl tactic from middle-school that can turn a confident adult into a self-doubting teen. It has been an extremely effective tactic because it conjures up that old terror of being uncool.
An established worldview that has brought the world to the brink of global catastrophe has the weird audacity to smugly demean any viewpoint not strictly aligned with it.

Right. It’s a modern form of witch burning (an even older terror than of not being cool). Very effective when combined with tactics of cyber-bullying.
