Interesting facet of the American mind is that if you tell Americans they have a treasure in their hands they may or may not care. But if you tell them that treasure is being taken away, they’re just as likely to get crazed obsessed about protecting it. Some people should beware.

basically a 2:1 ratio according to Kahneman and Tuversky. people rate it twice as distressing on standardized indices to have something taken away as it was pleasureable to first receive it. but it isn't strictly american, the results are replicated globally.
