It's the foundational basis of monopolistic capitalism. It's prevalent now; was prevalent during the Gilded Age. The inherent problem with capitalism in its most basic state is that it grows, inhabits and kills its host - not unlike metastasized cancer. It's greed, unchecked.

Most of the wealth created is the theft of the time, labor and talent of people employed, incarcerated, or under occupation. The 'value' that lands you on the Forbes list represents the amount of human energy you succeed in syphoning off.
