People who are forced to work at jobs they hate, desperate to keep that job even though it robs them of life-force more than it pays them in money, who nevertheless need it because it is the only way to survive, are in a very real way not free.

Real freedom would be autonomy: the condition whereby values determine activities, not the other way around. But we would need an economy not based on money, which is a value-neutral means of exchange. Simmel, Weber are like authors of tomorrow.
