Great religious stories are like coded messages. Things like crucifixion to resurrection, and slavery to the Promised Land, mean don’t worry, have faith: the world is cruel and it will take some time... but you will get to the better place.

I see those as opiates so that the masses of oppressed don't rise up and take what they're owed.

What you’re leaving out is how many great social justice movements in the US emerged from religious circles: Abolition from early evangelicals in New Hampshire, many suffragette leaders were Quakers, and MLK Jr. was a Baptist preacher.

This is really cherry picking as the best justification for slavery is the bible and even until now the most religious states (a bible belt) is where racism is at worse and confederate flags are still waving. Sorry @marwilliamson but you are wrong here.

What kinda proves my point that the association of organized religion and mass social justice movements being coincidental is the overall history of organized religion. It leading to social justice is the exception, not that norm throughout human history.

While that is most definitely true @marwilliamson, it doesn't change, that so is he. And the Bible gets pretty specific about loyalty to your leaders, even in the New. But now and then, groups of Xians realize, that it's truly & only Jesus example that matters, the rest garbage
