1/ There was a time when the Left didn’t have to fight for power so much within the Democratic Party; it wasn’t treated like a political stepchild the way it is now.

2/ According to @mtaibbi the establishment chooses every four years who they will promote four years hence; clearly Kamala, Pete and Amy are the Democratic chosen ones.

3/ The new book “Lucky” displays how the Democratic establishment did more to choose the candidate than to pave the way for real democracy in its primary season.

The Dem party cut the Left loose during and right after WW2. LBJ & Nixon tried to continue expanding on FDR's populist programs, but the Center and Right kept resisting so much that they even had a hissy fit when Carter put solar heaters on the White House to set an example.

Sort of , Marianne. There were many virulent opponents of people like FDR and LBJ within the DP. But it is true that the corporate state has solidified its power at a new level. That is why the centrists are so aghast in Nevada. They are really clutching their pearls.

I think this might be too optimistic—what time are you thinking of here? and what do you mean by the Left? to me it seems like the Left has always been suppressed by the DP

beg to differ: always treated like a stepchild. Centrism is needed in a nation as diverse as this one, and i am way on the left, always have been always will be. - I used to complain - see a bigger picture now. Until there is more truth in news and consciousness - here we are.

this is ahistorical tbh. before the civil rights era, democrats were progenitors of Jim Crow. LBJ ramped up the Vietnam war. Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were centrists.
