Over time, the birds that are born with genetic mutations of colour are awarded with more sex. They have colourful babies, and on it goes.

Males are often more colorful because they compete for female attention and therefore experience evolutionary sexual selection pressure. Darwin wrote about females having the dominant role in sexual selection in dimorphic species.
