If the US gov’t wanted to eradicate poverty, it could do so much to eradicate poverty. If it wanted to eradicate hunger, it could do so much to eradicate hunger. If it wanted to eradicate illiteracy, it could do so much to eradicate illiteracy. The lesson here? It really doesn’t.

instead we demonize countries like china that have eradicated (absolute) poverty. poverty is big business in the US, and the government, regardless of party, are responsible for ensuring it continues.

Not government's role. That is the role for neighbors and communities. Churches and selectmen. Perhaps the reason it doesn't happen is because of the selfishness and rot in neighborhoods. Instead of looking to government, look in the mirror.
