I’m trying to think of a species that systematically destroys its own habitat, fails to care for and nourish its young, acts in total contradiction to the natural world - yet continues to survive and thrive. So far I haven’t been able to come up with one.

Imagine a colony of ants where every ant is working & competing against each other, each ant pursuing its happiness\self-interests, and lo and behold, you have the Human Race. Shockingly and chock full of irony, it works. It‘s messy but also amazing, but I get what you're saying.

Add the words "for profit" and you have just described capitalism.

You didn't look very hard. The first link was 11 that destroy their environment. Sakes and most reptiles don't care for their young, along with fish jellyfish and a slew of others.

One scientist likened humanity to protozoa in a petri dish that just eat up all the food and multiply. Eventually, there is no more food left and they hit the side of the dish and die.

I think Daniel Quinn diagnosed this perfectly in Ishmael and also The Story of B. Humans are like any other feeder population, with the exception that we practice a specific kind of agriculture - totalitarian agriculture - which has allowed us overshoot (and collapse) even worse.

Any species with the capacity will do so. At a more micro level we can look at how invasive species over hunt and mess up local eccosytems dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/…

Hate to tell you this, but it's not exactly the case the other mammals are perfectly altruistic. Some males of a species eat the offspring of a female they want to mate with. Some species rape.

I was tempted to be dumb and say beavers just to be contrary.
