I love Marianne even if I disagree with her on a lot of big things. The “mental health crisis” our society has indeed created is about evolutionary mismatch, not $400, but hell yes government and society should be taking better actions to ameliorate it.
Our political system spent 40 yrs creating a time when even before the pandemic 40% of us couldn't afford $400 unexpected expenditure, creating chronic anxiety & despair among millions of people; now worse. What does that system call this problem? "A mental health crisis."

Of course not. What I’m saying is our economy has been so rigged in favor of the very few over the last few decades that many forms of societal despair have become inevitable. We need to treat the causes as well as the symptoms & chronic economic anxiety is one of those causes.

The “safety net” we have isn’t working to provide enough economic certainty for many people. But it’s there. I believe there’s evidence that even if everyone had, say, UBI it would only lead to minor mental health gains. Just the rates of obesity are a sign of the deeper problem.
