Politicians often refer to “middle class” or “working class,” but infrequently say “the poor.” Perhaps it’s too confronting; why in the richest country in the world are so many poor? They discuss poverty like it’s a “social problem” when in fact it’s the scourge of so many lives.

Because we have so thoroughly demonized the poor in this country that even the term itself is considered pejorative, but that mindset does even more harm. No one chooses to be poor.

My social work classes taught me that many decision makers in society benefit from poverty & have absolutely no substantive plans on eradicating it.

Usually they treat it like it's some kind of moral failing on your part if you don't have money, naturally they are all millionaires
