Politicians often refer to “middle class” or “working class,” but infrequently say “the poor.” Perhaps it’s too confronting; why in the richest country in the world are so many poor? They discuss poverty like it’s a “social problem” when in fact it’s the scourge of so many lives.

Makes them sound too much like the villains of a Charles Dickens novel or something.

Poverty is not a social problem. In the richest country in the world poverty is a deliberate, cruel political decision made by real human beings who value power and profit over human life and dignity.

It is safe to advocate for those who fall in the category of working. It's socially acceptable to be concerned about Americans who are working class, but the unemployable? Those not employed or looking? Oh we cant be looking out for THOSE people. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Middle class isn’t the poor. That’s why the goal is to have a healthy middle class

This is why I can't stand how often AOC or Bernie go on and on about "working class", "working families", or "working poor". Why is our society so obsessed with work? Human value should not be based on your income or 9-5

and you’ve put your finger on the entire premise of the trickle down eCONomy- the intentional erasure of the poor. can’t get made if you hide the cracks in your con game

This is compounded by how many Americans think they are middle class when they are living paycheck to paycheck. Language really matters

its because if they referred to them as poor and acknowledged the scourge capitalism has on the poor the people would hold them accountable for not helping. they turn the poor against the poor.

With today’s technology eradicating poverty is a choice.
