Re taking “stepping stones” to universal health care: Do we take “stepping stones” to increased military spending or “stepping stones” to tax cuts for the richest? Do not apologize for wanting - or expecting - what the citizens of every other advanced democracy take for granted.

There lies the difference in philosophies. You want cradle to grave government involvement, I want government out of my way. These advanced democracies you speak of, wouldn't exist if not for our military.

You are right @marwilliamson. I can't imagine anyone wishing no healthcare for their neighbors. Using 'affordable' with it represents denial of the fact that it is the basic human right, especially in the richest and most powerful nation in the recent history of the world.

What we take for "granted" is that the necessities of life such as food, water, shelter, and health care, come from your labor and only those who legitimately cannot provide for themselves should get anything paid for by others.

Actually we did take “stepping stones” toward all those things over decades. And we also took gradual steps toward civil rights, space exploration, and building the interstate highway system. Changing too much too fast often comes with painful unintended consequences.

We didn’t become the great nation we are by being like everyone else. That is not a good reason to do anything.

In part, many are brainwashed to believe if you don’t have healthcare your not working hard enough. Which stigma then compounds. That doesn’t even include people who lost jobs, which we feel sympathy but do nothing about. We need an educated public and an empathetic politic.
