This issue is not one of authority, it is one of financial reality. He can't CANCEL the debt. He can only transfer the debt to other people who didn't agree to the loan and who received absolutely no benefit from it. Please, everyone, stop saying "cancel" it's not possible.

Stop. I am so sick of this topic. You chose to go to school ; it has a cost associated with it. Should the middle class tax payers just pay for everything now - credit card debt, cars purchased ? Homes ?

He KNOWS that he can. That's not even in question. He's using this as an excuse to not excuse it all. He will give $5k to $10k relief and say WOW look what I did. This is the schmuck that made it so you can't discharge your loans in bankruptcy. Sorry that was rude Mr. Schmuck.

Joe is a coward. And he probably does not even remember saying anything about student debt.

Man this would be a huge thing for my family. It would allow me to save more money each month.

Now that would be a big boost for the economy!
