It’s outrageous the way we’re treating our teachers as though their health is expendable and their fear illegitimate. This is the legacy of a misogynistic paradigm where the needs of women and children have been deemed secondary for centuries and longer.

I agree mostly, but I think it is a stretch to claim this is about sexism. There are male teachers and janitors who are just as affected by these decisions. If anything is sexist, how about we ask why men are so vilified that they fear becoming a teacher?

No our children are everything & they need other children by their side. To shame families (which include overly stressed out mothers- who are also women by the way) for wanting their children to thrive again is just sick. Follow the science. Children aren’t spreading the virus.

I wonder what the response would be like if teachers were predominantly men

This is what patriarchal societies provide. A system in which children are status symbols and women are chattel. They value physical strength over intellect, the ability to conquer rather than nurture. And violence is always part of the program.

What about all of the other essential workers that have worked throughout the past year? They have been able to work in public... many is jobs that come in much closer contact with the public?

Your condemnation of “the way we treat teachers” is competing with the way we treat “women and children”. The teachers have little to fear from children who don’t carry or pass the disease. In fact, the children have more to fear from the teachers. OPEN THE SCHOOLS!
@marwilliamson I know you’re a really sincere person as I came to a service you held outside Detroit in the ‘90’s. ODAT much 💕

Same in the UK and even in “liberal” The Netherlands. We have the infrastructure and tools to provide education safely from home.
