1/ In pagan cultures, people kept alive a sense of divine partnership between humanity and nature. Rituals were held routinely to fortify the bond between people and trees, rivers, earth and sky.

2/ An early dispensation of Christendom destroyed that sacred connection, calling it blasphemous & replacing it with the idea that God had given earth to man to use for his utilitarian purposes. That split was for all intents and purposes the beginning of our environmental crisis

3/ The attitudinal and philosophical split between humanity and nature has caused extraordinary damage not only to nature but also to ourselves. The industrialized, rationalistic and materialistic perspectives of the 20th C fortified the split and did tremendous collective harm.

4/ The 21st C has brought a reckoning with a worldview so out of alignment with who we truly are, as well as a rebirth of understanding that a purely material explanation of the world will never satisfy either the needs or longings of the human race. It is time for repair & reset

The crazy thing is that even the Bible doesn't say what they think it says. Stewardship/etc means responsibility for, not just "use this as your personal dump." So many of that view want the power without the responsibility - which is ironic given many hate "handouts".🤦🏻‍♂️

How should we go about integrating care and respect for the environment into our modern way of life? I can see in the comments many religious folks are against any idea thats different from what they've been taught.

the whole planet is a living organism, we are a small part of it, we flow from the same energy

We need to give the environment the same rights as a human being to a healthy, productive life. The law and the rich have given it to corporations so why not the environment? If we think of it as a person it makes sense to nurture and protect the earth.

You're conflating "who we truly are" with "who you wish we were". Which doesn't mean that you don't seek out improvement in the human condition, but the species has never failed to leave tire tracks across utopian ideals.
