1/ We have to be intentional about rooting out conditions that led to the emergence of an authoritarian leader. Something we have to insist on is that American kids start learning civics again. Too many Americans have no clue how democracy works or what it is we need to protect.

2/ Only 9 states & DC require a year of U.S. government or civics, while 30 states require a 1/2 year & the other 11 states have no civics requirement. This is a crisis. I remember looking at footage of rioters at the Capitol thinking, “These people have no idea where they are.”

More civics education wouldn't solve all our problems, but too many are mad because they don't know how to get the attention of Congress and have their ideas have a chance of becoming law & all they see is the continued corporate capture of our government and they get angrier.

This is incredible, I had no idea- which 11 states are those?

Correct. I also remember learning about logical fallacies in middle school. It's desperately important for this to also be taught.

I would like to see them teach critical thinking and the ability to evaluate sources. My teenager does a lot of research on her own thanks to the ease of internet access. And a lot of teenagers are very aware of the problems in our government.

I agree as a teacher, mom and patriotic person. Being patriotic is NOT being nationalistic. For one, I want to reclaim US flag symbol from the extremists.

We need to start teaching Americas real history in schools as well.

Back in my day, 1981, we could not graduate to freshman high school without at least C- in "Constitution," as the class was called. It was required.

Yeah, what were their demands? “We want Trump to still be the prez?” Super fucking rad.
