1/ We have to be intentional about rooting out conditions that led to the emergence of an authoritarian leader. Something we have to insist on is that American kids start learning civics again. Too many Americans have no clue how democracy works or what it is we need to protect.

2/ Only 9 states & DC require a year of U.S. government or civics, while 30 states require a 1/2 year & the other 11 states have no civics requirement. This is a crisis. I remember looking at footage of rioters at the Capitol thinking, “These people have no idea where they are.”

Am I jaded to think this is by design?

"These people have no idea where they are" ... Correct! ... If we want people to revere and respect our Democratic Institutions ... they need to be taught about Democracy and our Sacred Institutions as students!

After the 1980's, dozens of classes and programs were cut in the schools where I grew up, many things that use to be covered became out of pocket expenses for parents. So even in nicer areas, if your parents didn't have money, you were screwed.

They have no respect for what it stands for! So far removed from what it took to fight for freedom. And in their ignorance they seem to be fighting against the exact thing that will save them! It doesn’t make sense. The Education system has failed them it is time for new ideas!💯

Civics is of course important, but please don’t forget that education needs to also include citizenship. Watching rioters destroy their communities all through 2020 I kept thinking, “This anger should be directed at your elected representatives rather than your neighbors.”

And some of them graduated from expensive colleges, still in student debt. And didn’t even get basic civic education! What a ripoff 😬

They needs to be in school first before you dictate curriculum

Applying basic civics knowledge, I almost got a bill passed right out of college (H.R. 5978, brought to The Floor in June, 2010 by Rep. Tsongas). It was killed by Republicans after it was bundled into The Obama-McConnell Bill, which they killed. 2 many don't know basics & get mad
