1/ We have to be intentional about rooting out conditions that led to the emergence of an authoritarian leader. Something we have to insist on is that American kids start learning civics again. Too many Americans have no clue how democracy works or what it is we need to protect.

2/ Only 9 states & DC require a year of U.S. government or civics, while 30 states require a 1/2 year & the other 11 states have no civics requirement. This is a crisis. I remember looking at footage of rioters at the Capitol thinking, “These people have no idea where they are.”

The last thing that our oligarch masters want is for the masses to learn about how our government and economy works.

Agreed, but this education cannot be left up to local school boards. I studied history at East Texas College in Texarkana Arkansas where they (very conveniently for the deep south) skipped the chapters on Reconstruction!

The failures of the policies of the neo liberal aka right wing of the Democrats bear a lot of the responsibility for the rise of Trump. I’m sure the Clintons, Obama, Pelosi, and Biden studied Civics, yet here we are.

The entire education system needs to be changed. Students are barely learning; they are cultured to memorize and regurgitate info back to “excel” via testing. We need to stop teaching to tests & help cultivate critical thinking & a passion for life-long learning.

You are absolutely Correct ... how can we expect citizens to function in this democracy with no understanding of how it works ... It's like getting a gadget in the mail ... with no directions ...

We must teach civics! Students need to understand reverence and respect for democracy! When you have freedom you don’t want to take that for granted! Not even for a minute. We must teach them to value what it really means to be a citizen and what those responsibilities mean! 💯

exactly. I’ve long felt civics must be compulsory.

We must teach civics, but we must also teach kids how the system has been abused and continues to be abused. If they can recognize the abuses, maybe they can avoid falling victim to future abusers. To teach them, we'll need to teach the teachers, too.

Unless corporate money is removed from the political realm, absolutely nothing is going to ever change. Nothing.
