1/ We have to be intentional about rooting out conditions that led to the emergence of an authoritarian leader. Something we have to insist on is that American kids start learning civics again. Too many Americans have no clue how democracy works or what it is we need to protect.

2/ Only 9 states & DC require a year of U.S. government or civics, while 30 states require a 1/2 year & the other 11 states have no civics requirement. This is a crisis. I remember looking at footage of rioters at the Capitol thinking, “These people have no idea where they are.”

I agree. However, civics has changed from when I learned about it in school. Learning how govt really works is to teach kids about dark money, lobbyists, special interests and the unbalanced relationships/power that corporations have in American Governance/electoral politix.

Still, the things you learned about in school are things that every generation needs to learn.

💯 agree. Even at the college level, civics/Into to American Politics isn't expressly required. I've had too many conversations with Govt majors who could not name basic functions of our government.

Our children were reared in a spiritual, not religious, environment. I recently asked my 22 yr old daughter if she loved our country. She honestly did not know how to answer. That generation does not know our country, all that we stand for, fought for, and try to keep.😥
