As an American living abroad - in the UK, a longstanding ally of the United States - I simply can't overstate just how wrong Trump is that "the world respects us again." The world thinks America is broken, dysfunctional, damaged. The Capitol insurrection entrenched that further.

We had slavery but then we had Abolition; we had the institutionalized suppression of women but then we had the Women’s Suffrage movement; we had segregation but then we had the Civil Rights movement. We’ve been awful before, and we’re going to fix it just like our ancestors did.

We’ve never actually fixed the problems, though. Slavery then Jim Crow then the prisons system. Suffrage but black women were left out and still disenfranchisement. We go from really bad to slightly less bad but still bad.
