There are two main reasons why the problem we have now was allowed to fester as long as it was: 1) that its adherents are primarily white, at 2) that some in the Republican party saw it as a political opportunity that could be “managed” if it got out of hand.

The American Civil War never ended I grew up in Atlanta in the 50s. The resentment for what the Northern troops did to Atlanta and The South was palpable. That resentment has never been addressed.
