There are two main reasons why the problem we have now was allowed to fester as long as it was: 1) that its adherents are primarily white, at 2) that some in the Republican party saw it as a political opportunity that could be “managed” if it got out of hand.

It's another symptom of a flawed electoral system that makes it impossible for more than two parties to compete. If we reform our elections to take on Ranked Choice Voting and Party Proportional, we'd have real accountability for our officials and choice for voters.

I’m not sure that as a whole the entire thing was carefully planned that well. As some of the interviews l saw had such varying degrees of grievances and problems with any array of the government and both parties etc. though the demographics you point to are mostly true.

And the festering is a long standing mix of well quite frankly all the different opinions one might find in any large group of citizens. And yes they fit loosely a general demographic of angry white males and their relatives. The key as l interpret it is it’s on the rise.
