Democracy is messy, the freedom to exchange ideas is messy & the emergence of new possibilities is messy. Any system or institution that seeks to hold on to mechanisms of control out of fear that any mess might threaten their power, is a conduit not of progress but of stagnation.

It's less messy when the populace is educated in Civics. It's really messy when everyone is fighting for whatever they want with no consideration for what it will do to society or their fellow citizens. The political solutions to problems are known & the data is quantified.

Noam Chomsky would have a lot to say on the possibility for institutions not to be based on fear. With him, Machiavelli, Max Weber, Karl Marx and countless others.
