They say that when bad stuff happens, a bit of you is stuck at that age forever, (probably why my favorite food is whipped cream and I still wave at trains) until you deal with it. Same with a country. admit it, deal with it, and grow up.

Seemed quite accurate. And one can't help but suppose bad economics is likely involved, as it famously promotes simple minded egoism and a lack of awareness and attention to important ethical issues, which is also a hallmark of certain phases of childhood.
