1/ I remember interviews of Trump in the 1980s & he wasn’t that bad. He wasn’t someone I would’ve voted for for president but he had a reasonableness about him. He wasn’t horrifying.

2/ He changed over the years. It was apparently Kushner who convinced him that playing the hate card would get him elected president. I tend to think if he had stayed who he was, he still might have won in 2016 & he’d probably be headed for a second term now.

3/ For so long – and I know, we still have 40 some odd days to worry about – he was such a malignant presence that all some of us could think about was how to get him out of the WH. Now that his presidency is waning, I think of him less as a danger and more as a human tragedy.

His xenophobia was always there. He found an audience that adulate him and it fed his narcissism to guide his cruel, criminal decisions. The truth is, he’s always been tragic and he will be dangerous until his last day on earth.

He's a grifter, currently raking in donations for a fake effort to "overturn" the election. Most of his behavior is calculated deal making for personal gain. Not a scary fascist, nor a total buffoon. The worst & most violent of his followers are the ones who scare me.

I wonder how bad it will be once the smoke clears

Nope. Nope. Nope. The people that have died and the hundreds of millions that are suffering because of Trump is a tragedy. Trump is a monster who needs to be crushed into the dirt with impunity.

But he's a symbolic reflection of a greater tragedy, one that we must rewrite. If education were a greater priority than political mega-donors and mainstream news was not a tool of corporate agendas, if this experiment hadn't veered so off course, Trump wouldn't have happened.

He was always a psychopath and narcissist. He was born without a fundamental component of normal human psychology/personality, which is empathy.

@marwilliamson As someone who has enjoyed a lot of what you’ve posted over the past month, this thread is bizarre, far too generous, and reminds me of all of the reasons why I didn’t support your candidacy. I really don’t understand the point you’re trying to make here...

He was just as bad in the 80’s...he just lacked followers. His hate and divisiveness have always been there...it’s not a political strategy but a part of his personality structure...defense mechanisms.
