I understand the critique of #DefundThePolice as a slogan, what I don’t understand is that it’s critics never say what they would do instead. “It’s a bad slogan, so let’s leave policing as it is” is a thousand times worse than any slogan.

I think it’s an unwise slogan because it miscommunicates. Less $ for police wouldn’t have saved George Floyd, Breonna Taylor or Philippe Castille etc. It alone doesn’t get to the core problem: corrupted police culture & inadequate training. #ReformThePolice sounds better to me.

They could get less money and still be just as mean, and some of them could be just as murderous.

You know how this system works Marianne. You do. MONEY makes the world go round. Defund the police is the most direct response to the problem. It's not a bad slogan. IT'S BEING HONEST AND DIRECT. Please recognize this truth.

That's why defund is a step towards abolition. Real abolitionists understand that the cops will react negatively to a removal of funding. Funding needs to be directed into groups and orgs that take care of the people, so they can then protect each other from the violent system.

But if funding is tied to results and they are nog in situations they should not be in, shooting will go way down.

Work towards abolish and replace. Divest into a department that actually helps people. The police are beyond reform.

Police reform is not a real thing. It has never worked all the times we tried before. The money needs be redirected.
