I understand the critique of #DefundThePolice as a slogan, what I don’t understand is that it’s critics never say what they would do instead. “It’s a bad slogan, so let’s leave policing as it is” is a thousand times worse than any slogan.

I think it’s an unwise slogan because it miscommunicates. Less $ for police wouldn’t have saved George Floyd, Breonna Taylor or Philippe Castille etc. It alone doesn’t get to the core problem: corrupted police culture & inadequate training. #ReformThePolice sounds better to me.

Listen you two, we want to Defund the Police. You're speaking from privilege. Don't try to tell us what we mean, we're telling you exactly what we mean.
That is the core of the problem along with the complete lack of oversight and a system that incentives violence.
There's no way to reform. The dallas police force was one of the best at following the obama plan of reform and it didn't work. You can't reform a system that is rotten since the 1700s. Police unions are too powerful. The whole system needs to go and be remade from ground up.

But I Do Believe There Should Be A Lot More Spending In Local Communities Instead Of All The Money Going Into The Police Unions!! There Should Be A More Give And Take Concerning Policing!!!
Yeah except we do want to defund them. Then move those funds to areas that PREVENT crime in the first place. So, yeah, no, defund the police DOES communicate its intention, but only the more insidious-sounding half of it. It fails to mention the re-distribution to prevention.

Reform doesn't work...try again.
Reform the police has been said for my entire adult life, Marianne. It didn't change anything and it didn't elicit a response from the general public. Defund the police at least makes headlines and forces casuals to look at the issue. It's not meant to "sound nice."
It's not the training, it's the purpose of the police. As I see it, the police are only there to protect the rich and their property. As seen by the violence by police with regard to the peaceful protests this year, the people don't matter to the police.

Marianne you are right and I give u a lot of credit for speaking it
