Almost 250 yrs of slavery plus almost 100 yrs of segregation leaves Black America with a lot more than a need for charity, an apology or “race-based policies.” It leaves them with an IOU in their hands that America has yet to pay. #WhyReparations

That is up to the community receiving reparations to decide, not white people. Paternalism has run its course.
The point is, it's not for us to decide.
"You're white so its just as much your fault," Um, so u do realize that @marwilliamson wrote this tweet & is advocating for reparations, right, not against it. "Don't blame others"... U defensive much? Guilt Complex? U white too?

Replying to @MaestriNonna
Ur's is a mindless, patronizing response. Had u ever listened to @marwilliamson speak at length on the lasting harm of slavery & the overdue reparations then u'd understand her deep conviction to the policy & how important it really is. It's more than tossing cash at people, btw.

No, but inaction makes the wrongs by the U.S. even worse.

Perhaps u missed the "250 yrs of slavery" & "100 yrs of segregation" part of @marwilliamson tweet. I'm comfortable saying u have benefited from those 350 yrs whether u're prepared to admit it or not.

It's a debt owed. Hundreds of years of government sanctioned racism/terrorism affecting countless black Americans, & u think that just the people who care, such as @marwilliamson , should give their salaries, & that'll make up for it. The scale needed is at a federal gov't level.

No. Everyone has not benefited & not all are owed. It's called slavery for a reason. Generations after generations after generations of slaves being owned as property & not having the freedom of whites has resulted in devastating inequalities between white & black Americans now.

@marwilliamson is making the 1st steps in paying reparations. There's no pretense of virtue coming from her. She understands there's no glory to be had in wanting reparations. It's from a position of shame, embarrassment, & profound sorrow that the gov't should offer reparations.
Ur perspective is wrong. It's not that we personally are having to pay for the sins of our ancestors. Not at all. Quite simply it's the gov't recognizing that it made legal the torment of a race of people for 350+ years, & it's time it pays its dues.
