One thing about the early nordic social democrats is, while they were largely marxists, they were also obsessed with improving the productive capacity of capitalism. You need a good economic base to build socialism on

It’s only mystifying when you forget that they have what amounts to a neoliberal state media constantly blasting out that narrative, think tanks analyzing it with faux seriousness, hundreds of political operatives spinning it, and billions of dollars of dark money supporting it.

Very much this. It's been dispiriting to find out how deeply many of my non-political acquaintances have internalized this myth. It only became apparent to me after starting to study economics and I grew up as a lefty. In Finland. The myth was efficiently exported globally.
