They really need to beef up teaching civics in the schools. Tens of millions of Americans clearly know nothing about the difference between a democracy and a police state. Even worse, when they learn they seem to prefer the latter.

true for many - not true for just a bit more than many!! - totally agree we MUST know our history - the good, the bad, the ugly, the possible - own, heal, move "forward"

It can't be beefed up in schools until the teachers learn it first. Duh..dont you know this is a structural design to have an uneducated popular in the way their government operates?

This Civics teacher is doing her best. It feels like an uphill battle as our educational institutions need a major overhaul in many areas. But in the area of Civics alone a good start would be to give us a full year instead of a semester.

What democracy should they learn? Finland? Iceland?

They prefer a police state when they are the ones doing the oppressing. And they project onto opponents that we would stoop to their level. Which terrifies them. Imagine being terrified of your own moral vacuum.

Dontcha know Marianne that school curriculums have been deliberately dumbed down over the years, through lack of funding, politicizing of textbooks, etc.

I’m just wondering that if when some people learn and still prefer the latter, do they have the right to believe what they believe? What's the difference between a free country and an authoritarian country if both education system is designed to only produce one type of thinking?

I loved civics in school.

When they touch on lobbying in junior high school and high school, they simply define the term without discussing the negative impact that it has on people and environment. This is by design. If we were taught younger, we'd be radicalized faster

You’re talking about lockdowns and curfews, right?
