They really need to beef up teaching civics in the schools. Tens of millions of Americans clearly know nothing about the difference between a democracy and a police state. Even worse, when they learn they seem to prefer the latter.

The primary value in politics *now* for some is winning. Not democracy, not the republic, but simply being part of the team that wins. How do we unpack that?

Has anyone told Biden?

I think it’s simply that many of them have the underlying assumption that they’re the beneficiaries of the police state. They never imagine it ever turning on them. So they assume giving it more power is always justified

Civics and Philosophy needs to have its own dedicated curriculum starting in middle school. The ethics of the next generation is always the most important determinant of how the future will go, we should stop leaving so much of it to chance.

Yes, and thank you. My homeschooling 8th-grader and I have had amazing, very adult discussions stemming from her civics lessons, which she does online at time4learning. She now wants to start a youth-for-democracy organization, so she can make a difference before she can vote. 💙

I attended school in 1970’s-1980’s and for all the failings of a rural Va. school system, I lucked out with civics teachers. Went to presidential classroom in DC, visited Congress, while in high school. We are clearly in need of improved civics and teaching inclusion.

I don't think Trump supporters realize what they may be summoning up - life under a dictatorship is insecure. Most people in one live in fear. Perhaps the fault is education as you suggest, Marianne.
