I can’t understand why thinking Americans should have the same or better healthcare, or educational or economic opportunities that citizens in other advanced democracies have should be considered “too far left.” What’s the downside?

I don't want to crappy government run education. That's probably the biggest reason why you people don't understand the problems with socialism. You're not educated.

Correct, health insurance companies do not innovate healthcare. Neither do medical researchers when you slash their budgets.
US GDP grossly out performs these countries.

Free healthcare and free education is one thing but what isn’t fine is the powers at be behind it all. Along with all those perks you’ll find yourself with a complete lack of freedom and forever under their rule, all that you’ve taken for granted - gone..no thanks.

Because the care we receive here is better. There isn’t the rationing that goes on in other countries. When you have a government system there is rationing and the quality of care goes down.

It would be better if the US moved away from an employer based system and have the private citizen purchase insurance directly from the company. We also need to allow for across state line purchases.
