I can’t understand why thinking Americans should have the same or better healthcare, or educational or economic opportunities that citizens in other advanced democracies have should be considered “too far left.” What’s the downside?

The rich being thinking that they’ll be slightly less rich

no downside. providing these things would reduce the profits of a few giant companies. it’s cheaper for them to spread disingenuous propaganda than for them to pay proper taxes that create a stable society. they’re playing chicken with the proverbial torches and pitchforks mob

The downside is for the plutocracy. They wouldn’t be able to hoard all the national wealth generated by the labor force for themselves. They’d still be ridiculously rich but wouldn’t have the satisfaction of crushing millions of other people. It’s pure evil.

The downside is rich people don't make money if we do these things

So you don’t understand economics, history or reality. That generally explains Democratic voters.
