I wonder how not being able to read peoples’ facial expressions serves the emotional development of children under the age of eight? Honest question.

Excellent point. Also, how many children are already looking more at their tablets than on facial expressions of other human beings. Especially under the age of three, that’s when social interaction cues become established.
