As we near the moment of knowing that this nightmare will be over, I’m not experiencing the giddy excitement I expected to feel. I feel more the shock of knowing how close we came to the demise of our democracy, and an almost tearful gratitude that we survived.

The nightmare is over for you. What was that nightmare, but the shadow of this country on full display. Now things will be hidden again and for the majority in this country the nightmare will continue unabated and ignored.

Humbling. A great mercy. Now we must change.

Oh stop. We didn't have a democracy before Trump and we don't magically have one now because of Biden. You have to know this.

We didn't survive yet. Biden has not promised or even acknowledged the things required to do to keep this country from collapsing. As we stand, we're still moving closer to that fate.

Because you are a truly amazing human. I am looking forward to the final word, so I can let relief wash over me, but joy and celebration seem still so far in the distance. We came too close, we can’t unsee that and there is much work yet to be done to heal and find a way forward.
