My father died 25 years ago today. So many times over the last 4 years I've been glad he wasn't here to see what's happening in this country; it would have broken his heart. But if he was here he'd be fighting like hell, saying "Don't let the bastards get you down!"

My mom died in 2019 and throughout the past year I've been glad she's not here during all this. She was a kindergarten teacher and being away from her kids during this pandemic (many of whom were ESL or extremely low income) would have shattered her heart into pieces.
