I wish someone could explain to me why police in other countries de-escalate situations nonviolently in so many instances where police in the U.S. are more likely to shoot to kill. We talk about “better police training” but nothing seems to change...

(I corrected a deleted tweet. Thank you for the advice from so many. One veteran wrote of how police training started changing in the 90s. Please re-post. I know I should’ve left the other one up. Just learning…)

99% of arrests end peacefully. So brainwashed.

Everyone carries guns in your country so its pretty much the wild west. That and the #systemicracism. We've got the same kind of racism here too. But because few people carry weapons, the police find other ways to brutalize brown and black people.
It could be that in many countries, most criminals don't have easy access to guns, let along how powered machine guns whereas when your police go somewhere, they have no idea what they are going to face?

You ever been to Panama? If police come to your house looking for you, but your family doesn't cooperate, the police will burn your house down. Colleagues from Panama & Venezuela both said they "didn't feel safe in the US because the cops are way too soft on criminals here".

So the 2 other times that day the police were there and did nothing isnt enough attempts at de-escalation? How many people did this guy need to injure for you to say it's ok to use escalation of force?

I don't think it's so much about police training as it is about lack of consequences. That's just human nature. LE should be licensed and insured and qualified immunity should be changed or rescinded

Lack of gun control. In Canada it’s a lot less likely/common that someone is holding a gun because most people don’t have them. The police don’t need to be as fearful of that which gives more space to deescalate properly... but we still have police issues here too.

Police in Britain don't carry guns-that's one reason. Another reason, I must admit, is that there are gun laws that prevent the public from having guns, so cops don't have to worry about that. Having said that-people do brandish knives and cops still de-escalate just fine.

The criminals in the US are way more likely to be armed with deadly weapons also
