I wish someone could explain to me why police in other countries de-escalate situations nonviolently in so many instances where police in the U.S. are more likely to shoot to kill. We talk about “better police training” but nothing seems to change...

(I corrected a deleted tweet. Thank you for the advice from so many. One veteran wrote of how police training started changing in the 90s. Please re-post. I know I should’ve left the other one up. Just learning…)

Police are trained to shoot to kill. If they discharge their weapon, empty it. That needs to change.

My guess: We are more fixated on ego and our superiority-through-domination/firepower myths. That carries over, of course, into our law endowment culture.

Screen potential cops for empathy, emotional intelligence and self discipline. Let their training include advancedmarshal arts and meditation to show how much insight and self discipline they have. A total transformation of what it means to be a police officer Here

Irish police don't even carry guns. There's challenges but by and large we know they're here to help us more than anything. They are called An Garda Síochana meaning 'Protectors of the Peace' as Gaeilge..might have something to do with it.

I think you know why. Those other countries that people think about still have their democracies intact, & their citizens are educated in how to keep it. So, they know that they must demand that all institutions show extreme deference to the citizens & value their rights & life.

I think largely the governments of other countries see the citizens as fundamentally valuable and necessary to their existence. Our government sees anyone not wealthy as nothing more than garbage. Unlike money, I think that attitude does trickle down to the municipalities.

Authoritarian countries actually have police forces just like this. Maybe theirs have fewer toys. The choice that nations have is to buy in to the policies that create democracy or authoritarian govts. We've built an authoritarian infrastructure. So, we couldn't keep democracy.

As you know USA POLICE has been quasi-military in its operation. This militarization was was also furthered by Israel’s trainings of so many police forces. U.S. Police are Being Trained by Israel—And Communities of Color Are Paying the Price. progressive.org/dispatches/u…
