I wish someone could explain to me why police in other countries de-escalate situations nonviolently in so many instances where police in the U.S. are more likely to shoot to kill. We talk about “better police training” but nothing seems to change...

(I corrected a deleted tweet. Thank you for the advice from so many. One veteran wrote of how police training started changing in the 90s. Please re-post. I know I should’ve left the other one up. Just learning…)

“We talk about it...” Now DO it.

Because they go through internal investigation and face the law for acting with guns first, questions later.

Just ask yourself this.....what are you going to do when a man with a knife is continuing to come after you? You would probably run like a scared wussy. The guy was not innocent and he didn’t drop the knife. It was a justified shoot.

it’s deeply cultural. US police was initially slave patrols. the ethos has simply been passed down over generations. the vast majority of local police departments are basically private businesses that use cronyism. larger PDs have a lot of cops that shouldn’t be.

If you're kitted out with all the gear normally used in wartime, you're going to use it. There's zero incentive for nonviolence.

I wish I could. Without sounding simplistic I think the solution, at least in part, understands understanding emotionally challenged individuals and though suffering from some level of trauma. Obviously when they are armed and not following instructions the lines are blurrier....

Perhaps the community should teach its residents how to behave instead of riot when cops respond. Don’t pull weapons on police. Don’t charge at them with guns. Don’t resist. Maybe don’t kill and assault each other. There goes 99.9% of the problem.

Reminds me of an old joke. How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb? One. But the lightbulb has to want to change.

They’re scared. Our societal fabric is regurgitated w/ holes. It’s old and rigid, like our nations leaders. It’s time to invigorate people with new societal structures based on health and positive innovations that make sense

Do police in other countries have more compliant citizens?Meaning,if an officer asks you to step out of your vehicle, you comply.Or if an officer asks for you license, you give it to him. Most of the cases in the news are escalated by the individual that is being questioned
